7 Days in May 2021 Pandemic Version- Martin Macdonald
2021 will mark the 5th time I have taken on the challenge of the 7 Days In May bicycle ride to raise funds for finding a cure to Pancreatic cancer. Over the 9 years of the ride, the effort has raised over $900,000 - 100% of which has gone directly to pancreatic cancer research in Canada.
Pancreatic Cancer remains the deadliest of the major cancers, with a first year survival rate of only 25%, and a 5 year survival rate of only 7%. The good news is that the survival rate has actually increased in recent years and with the focus of the Pancreatic Cancer Canada Foundation, we are optimistic that the survival rate will continue to increase.
As in 2020, 7 Days In May will direct 100% of funds raised to PancOne initiative that is being run by Pancreatic Cancer Canada. All proceeds will be directed towards clinical trials and other direct studies, focused on early detection and a cure as well as providing support and education for those impacted by the disease.
The 2021 version of 7 Days in May will look a lot different that previous years that saw a group of more than 30 riders cycling around Lake Ontario. It comes as no surprise that the challenges of the pandemic will not allow us to enjoy a group event in person, so we are going to have some fun "virtually". Each participant will ride on their own, as far and as often as possible during the period of May 1 to June 4, with particular focus on the last 7 days of May 29 to June 4 which would have been the dates of a "normal" 7 Days in May event .
The goal this year is to raise more than $125,000 and as in past years, 100% of funds raised will go directly to the cause. All administrative fees and overhead costs are covered by the riders and sponsors. This a founding principle of 7 Days and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.
Thank you for your support.
In our lifetime, we will be able to #EndPanCan with your continued help.
Ride on!
